The outer banks are one of the greatest places you could
want to be for hang gliding. The dunes of the outer banks
along with the excellent winds along the Atlantic Ocean
provide an excellent platform for flight. On December
17, 1903 the Wright brothers set the stage and to this
day people are still learning to fly on the beaches and
dunes of the outer banks. Since 1974 Kitty
Hawk Kites' Hang Gliding Training Center has been
central to hang gliding in the outer banks. Kitty Hawk
Kites is the largest hang gliding school in the world,
teaching hundreds of thousands of students’ skills
in non powered flight. They have taught students aged
8-80, male and female, physically fit and physically challenged.
All you need is a desire to fly.

Above
the beaches and dunes you get a great view from above
the Outer Banks. Tandem flights, like the one above,
are a lot of fun.

Dune
Hang Gliding lessons
are conducted at our training facility in Jockey's Ridge
State Park located at Mile Post 12 in Nags Head, NC. The
dunes of Jockey's Ridge provide the perfect platform for
learning to hang glide. They have plenty of height for beginners,
and are soft for landing. Through special arrangement with
the State Park Service, we are allowed to conduct hang gliding
lessons from these dunes. We have been providing lessons
at this site for over 25 years.

Fly
to altitudes of 2000 ft. or higher with a certified
instructor from our tow site at Currituck County
airport. The views of Currituck Sound, the ocean, and the
surrounding countryside are breathtaking from these altitudes.
Once released from the tow plane, the only sounds are from
you, the instructor, and the wind flowing around you. These
elements, combined with stalls, dives, and turns, are sure
to make tandem hang gliding the most exciting and memorable
experience of your stay in the Outer Banks.
